There have always been theories and predictions about the end of the world and when this is due to take place, but as we approach 2012, an increasing number of people have started to get a little concerned over the Mayan Long Count Calendar and the fact that it ends on the 21st December of said year. Click Here! The Mayan’s are known to have been fantastic astronomers, and the date itself is significant in that it is the winter/summer solstices. Also very note worthy is that this also happens to be when the earth is going to be in exact alignment with the sun and the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way. What effect if any this event is going to have on our planet is unknown, but some believe this could spell the end of the world as we know it. Some scientists have claimed that the earth’s poles could shift and this could set off a chain of cataclysmic natural disasters that could wipe out most of the world’s population. Others have said that there could be large planetary or asteroid type objects that are on huge elliptical orbits around our sun that are on a collision course with earth, which could happen around this time.
Apparently, every 100,000 years or so the earth experiences a hit from a large asteroid or meteorite, the size of which could cause massive destruction and a complete change to life on earth as we know it. The worrying thing is that time could be any day now, as this type of event is long overdue! Thankfully the skies are being watched to give us ample warning should anything be heading our way, but that does leave the question of what we would be able to do about it anyway…! Send Bruce Willis up into space to go and sort it out??
There are those that have theorised that the date could be more significant in a more spiritually profound, or evolutionary way, and that life will change and therefore bring about an end of the world as we currently know it , rather than the doomsday type scenario.
There are others that say that it is just one of many Mayan calendars, and as it finishes another take over its place, and so nothing of any significance is going to happen.
The truth is, and what makes this such an interesting subject, is that no one knows what is going to happen and these are just theorise and predictions. The Mayans were a very clever race of people and excellent astrologers, but how would they be able to predict the future of the planet from a time when the technology available to them was incredible primitive. Throughout the life of our planet there have been periods where it has gone through massive upheaval, effecting all the life that it is a home to. But how would the Mayans know that an event of this magnitude is due to take place at such a specific time.
We have been witness over the last couple of decades to some major natural disasters that seem to be getting more frequent, adding fuel to the fire that something big is on the horizon, and maybe the human race’s days could be numbered!
